Abstract

This research article delves into the integral role of anthropologist in ensuring the social and cultural sustainability of canal extension and modernization projects, in accordance with the guidelines of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Through stakeholder engagement, cultural heritage assessment, social impact assessment, livelihoods assessment, resettlement and compensation planning, capacity building and training, and monitoring and evaluation, anthropologists play a crucial role in facilitating inclusive decision-making processes and mitigating potential adverse effects on local communities and cultural heritage. By fulfilling these roles, anthropologists contribute to promoting social equity, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in infrastructure projects. This review explores existing literature on the topic, highlighting key themes, methodologies, and contributions of anthropologists in the Canal Extension and Modernization projects
